Roane County’s seat, on Watts Bar Lake and I-40.

P&L Business Services provides bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation for businesses in Kingston, Harriman, Rockwood, and across Roane County. We have been doing this work for 35 years, 28 of them in Tennessee.

Roane County sits right next door to Oak Ridge. In fact, the west end of Oak Ridge is in Roane County. Most of our work happens digitally, but we know this part of the state, and we are close enough to sit down together when that helps.

We bill hourly. You pay for the work you actually need, not a package built around someone else’s business.

What We Know About Roane County

Roane County is small enough that everyone knows everyone, and big enough that the filings still get complicated.

Roane County reaches into Oak Ridge.

The west end of Oak Ridge is in Roane County, not Anderson. A business there owes Roane County’s business tax and files its tangible personal property return with the Roane County assessor, even with an Oak Ridge address. It is an easy one to miss.

Three cities, three sets of rules.

Kingston, Harriman, and Rockwood each have their own city government. A business inside one of them owes that city’s business tax on top of the county’s; a business outside all three owes the county’s alone.

You get a person, not a ticket.

When you call, you reach someone who knows your business and knows Roane County. There is no queue and no case number.

Remote whenever you want it.

Documents come to us through our secure client portal or email. Meeting in person is an option you can use when you need it, not an obligation.

Who We Work With

We work with businesses across Kingston and Roane County, from owner-operators doing the books on Sunday night to established companies with a full payroll.

That includes trades and contractors, title companies, salons, dental practices, physical therapy clinics, cleaning companies, artists and content creators, and chambers of commerce. See who we serve.

If you are not sure whether you are the right fit, call and ask. It is a short conversation either way.

Serving Kingston and the Surrounding Area

Common Questions from Kingston Business Owners

Do you have an office in Kingston?

No. Our office is in Oak Ridge, and it moves to downtown Clinton in December 2026. Most of our Roane County clients work with us digitally, and we meet in person when it helps.

My business has an Oak Ridge address but sits in Roane County. What changes?

Your county. Your county business tax and tangible personal property return go to Roane County rather than Anderson County, even with an Oak Ridge address. It is one of the first things we confirm, because it is easy to get wrong.

Do you work with businesses in Harriman and Rockwood?

Yes. We work with businesses across Roane County, including Kingston, Harriman, Rockwood, and Oliver Springs. Most of the work happens digitally, and we meet in person when it helps.

Do I need a CPA or a bookkeeper?

For most businesses, a bookkeeper handles the ongoing work — recording transactions, reconciling accounts, running payroll, filing sales and business tax returns, and producing financial statements. A CPA is typically brought in for audits, complex tax strategy, or certified financial statements. We handle bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation, and we will tell you plainly if something needs a CPA. We work directly with several CPAs and will refer you to them.

How do you charge?

We bill hourly. We do not sell packages, because most businesses do not need the same amount of work every month and we would rather not charge you for hours you did not use.

Ready to hand off the books?

One conversation tells us whether we are a fit. There is no obligation and no pressure.
