Hardin Valley to Strawberry Plains, and everywhere in between.

P&L Business Services provides bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation for businesses across Knox County. We have been doing this work for 35 years, 28 of them in Tennessee.

Knoxville and Farragut have their own pages. Much of Knox County, though, sits outside both: Hardin Valley, Karns, Powell, Halls, Heiskell, Mascot, and Corryton are communities people know by name, but they are not cities. That changes which local filings apply.

We bill hourly. You pay for the work you actually need, not a package built around someone else’s business.

What We Know About Knox County

The biggest county we serve, and the one where the city line matters most.

Most of Knox County is not a city.

Outside Knoxville and Farragut, Knox County is unincorporated. A business in Hardin Valley or Powell files county business tax only, while its neighbor inside the Knoxville city limit files with both. A Knoxville mailing address does not settle it.

Strawberry Plains crosses three counties.

The community reaches into Knox, Jefferson, and Sevier counties. Your county business tax and tangible personal property return go to the county your property is actually in.

You get a person, not a ticket.

When you call, you reach someone who already knows your business. There is no queue and no case number.

Remote whenever you want it.

Documents come to us through our secure client portal or email. Meeting in person is an option you can use when you need it, not an obligation.

Who We Work With

We work with businesses across Knox County, from owner-operators doing the books on Sunday night to established companies with a full payroll.

That includes trades and contractors, title companies, salons, dental practices, physical therapy clinics, cleaning companies, artists and content creators, and chambers of commerce. See who we serve.

If you are not sure whether you are the right fit, call and ask. It is a short conversation either way.

Common Questions from Knox County Business Owners

Do you have an office in Knox County?

No. Our office is in Oak Ridge, and it moves to downtown Clinton in December 2026. Most of our Knox County clients work with us digitally, and we meet in person when it helps.

My mailing address says Knoxville, but I am not in the city. What changes?

Your local business tax. Many addresses in unincorporated Knox County carry a Knoxville mailing address. If your business sits outside the Knoxville and Farragut city limits, you owe Knox County’s business tax alone. We check the map, not the envelope.

Which Tennessee filings do you handle?

Annual city and county business tax returns, monthly sales tax filings, tangible personal property returns, annual franchise and excise tax returns, and quarterly payroll tax returns. We also serve as registered agent, which keeps your LLC from being administratively dissolved because a notice went to an old address or the circular file.

Do I need a CPA or a bookkeeper?

For most businesses, a bookkeeper handles the ongoing work — recording transactions, reconciling accounts, running payroll, filing sales and business tax returns, and producing financial statements. A CPA is typically brought in for audits, complex tax strategy, or certified financial statements. We handle bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation, and we will tell you plainly if something needs a CPA. We work directly with several CPAs and will refer you to them.

How do you charge?

We bill hourly. We do not sell packages, because most businesses do not need the same amount of work every month and we would rather not charge you for hours you did not use.

One conversation tells us whether we are a fit. There is no obligation and no pressure.
