Working With Us

What does P&L Business Services do?

We provide bookkeeping, payroll and payroll tax filing, tax preparation, Tennessee business tax filing, and registered agent services for businesses across East Tennessee. We have been doing this work for 35 years, 28 of them in Tennessee.

Do you only work with small businesses?

No. We work with businesses of every size, from owner-operators to established companies with a full payroll. What they have in common is that they would rather spend their time running the business than keeping its books.

What kinds of businesses do you work with?

Trades and contractors, title companies, salons, dental practices, physical therapy clinics, cleaning companies, artists and content creators, and chambers of commerce, among others. If you are not sure whether you are a fit, call and ask.

Where are you located?

Our office is at 109 W. Tennessee Ave. in Oak Ridge. In December 2026, we move to a new office in downtown Clinton. We serve businesses across East Tennessee, including Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Clinton.

What are your office hours?

Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 4:00, and Friday from 7:00 to 3:00.

Do I have to come into the office?

No. Most of our work happens digitally, but we meet clients in person when it helps. Some clients we see monthly. Some we have never met face to face. Both work.

How do I send you my documents?

Through our secure client portal, by email, or in person. Paper is fine too. Ziploc bags, DoorDash bags, and shoeboxes are all accepted.

What do you need from me to get started?

Bank and credit card statements, access to whatever system you are using now, and a conversation about how your business actually runs. We will tell you if we need anything else.

Are you a CPA firm?

No. We are a bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation firm. When a client needs an audit, complex tax strategy, or certified financial statements, we work directly with several CPAs and will refer you to them.

Bookkeeping

Do I need a CPA or a bookkeeper?

For most businesses, a bookkeeper handles the ongoing work — recording transactions, reconciling accounts, running payroll, filing sales and business tax returns, and producing financial statements. A CPA is typically brought in for audits, complex tax strategy, or certified financial statements. We handle bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation, and we will tell you plainly if something needs a CPA. We work directly with several CPAs and will refer you to them.

What do I actually get from a bookkeeper?

Bank, loan, and credit card accounts reconciled against what actually cleared. A profit and loss and a balance sheet you can read and use. A clear picture of what you owe and what you are owed. And someone to call when you have a question about a number.

How far behind can I be before it is too late?

There is no too late. We have picked up businesses that had not reconciled in two years. It takes longer and it costs more than staying current, but it is entirely fixable, and every month you wait makes it a little worse.

Can I just do my own books in QuickBooks?

You can, and most owners try. But the software is only as good as the categorization behind it, and categorization is a judgment call that depends on tax treatment, depreciation, and how the books will be read a year from now. A set of books that looks clean and is categorized wrong is worse than no books at all, because you will make decisions on it.

Payroll

Which payroll tax returns do you file?

Quarterly 941s, annual 940s, and state unemployment (SUTA), plus W-2s for your employees and 1099s for your contractors at year end.

Can you take over payroll mid-year?

Yes. It is common. We pick up the year-to-date figures from your current system so the W-2s at year end are correct and complete.

What happens if I have already missed a payroll filing?

Tell us. Missed filings are fixable, and they get more expensive the longer they sit. We would rather start with the honest picture than find it in January.

Do you handle 1099 contractors as well as employees?

Yes — both, including the year-end filings for each.

Who is liable if a payroll tax filing is late?

The business is, which is exactly why the deadlines are worth handing to someone whose job it is to watch them.

Tennessee Filings

Which Tennessee filings do you handle?

Annual city and county business tax returns, monthly sales tax filings, tangible personal property returns, annual franchise and excise tax returns, and quarterly payroll tax returns. We also serve as registered agent, which keeps your LLC from being administratively dissolved because a notice went to an old address or the circular file.

Which Tennessee filings does my business actually owe?

It depends on where you operate, what you sell, what equipment you own, and how your entity is structured. That is genuinely the answer — and it is why the first conversation is about mapping it rather than quoting a price.

I have been using an online service. Would I know if something was missed?

Usually not until a notice arrives. If you have never been asked about tangible personal property or city business tax, that is worth a conversation.

Do I owe business tax in more than one city?

Possibly. If you operate across multiple jurisdictions, you may owe in each. This is one of the most common things we find.

What if I have already missed a Tennessee filing?

Missed filings are fixable, and the sooner they are addressed the smaller the number. Bring us the notice.

Registered Agent

What is a registered agent?

The person or company named to receive legal notices and service of process on behalf of your business. Tennessee requires every LLC and corporation to name one, with a real address where documents can be delivered during business hours.

Can I just be my own registered agent?

Legally, yes, if you have a Tennessee street address and you are there during business hours. Whether you want to be is a different question — being your own agent means anything served on your business gets served on you, wherever you happen to be standing, in front of whoever happens to be there.

What actually gets sent to a registered agent?

Service of process for lawsuits, garnishments, and family court matters, plus official correspondence from the state — annual report notices, tax notices, and dissolution warnings.

Will I still have to remember to renew my LLC?

No. When we are your registered agent, we keep track of the annual report that keeps your LLC in good standing, so you are not the one who has to remember it.

What happens if my registered agent address is out of date?

You stop receiving notices you are still legally responsible for. The most common consequence is administrative dissolution of the entity, which removes the liability protection you formed it to have.

Billing

How do you charge?

We bill hourly. We do not sell packages, because most businesses do not need the same amount of work every month and we would rather not charge you for hours you did not use.

Do you offer monthly packages?

No. A quiet month costs less than a busy one. That is the whole pricing philosophy.

Is the first conversation free?

Yes. Tell us what you have, what shape it is in, and what you need out of it. There is no charge for that conversation and no obligation.

Still have a question?

Call us or send a note. It is a short conversation either way.
